As Thanksgiving approaches, we acknowledge that we are on the traditional land of the first people of Seattle, the Duwamish People past and present, and honor with gratitude the land itself and Duwamish Tribe . We recognize that for many Native Americans, Thanksgiving is a reminder of a dark history that is frequently misrepresented and minimized. Many children today are *still* learning the same harmful myths and stereotypes about “Pilgrims” and “Indians” that we learned when we were young.

Below are some resources about the true history of Thanksgiving, suggestions for talking about it in an accurate and age-appropriate way with children of all ages, and some great children’s books on Thanksgiving. We also recognize that Native cultures should be taught year-round, so check out indian-ed.org and oyate.org for some great resources.
